The University of Huddersfield expresses its support for the Hungarian Academy of Sciences’ research institutes and researchers, and protests the recent proposals to subject the majority of the Academy’s funding to political oversight. We are extremely concerned about the freedom of research in Hungary, and are writing to request a stop to the unilateral measures concerning the funding of the research institutes of the Hungarian Academic of Sciences (HAS). Scholarly freedom is essential to the pursuit of knowledge, and political interference in professional research constitutes a profound threat to democracy.
