Dear Members and colleagues,
The difficult situation at the Hungarian Academy of Sciences with respect to the planned amendment to the Academy Law and the Hungarian government’s new budget law has been public knowledge for some time. The Presiding Committee of the OeAW has also received messages pertaining to this issue from concerned colleagues.
In the summer of 2018 and again a few days ago, the OeAW wrote to Prime Minister Orbán and other members of the Hungarian government pointing out the importance of the freedom of scholarship and solid funding for basic research. It was important to us to send a clear message of solidarity with a long-term partner academy.
With my best wishes,
